MUSIC THERAPY
AND
MENTAL HEALTH

Music Therapy is an evidence-based treatment option for mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and stress.

EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION & EXPLORATION

Music therapists might work on exploring feelings, improving overall mood, or expressing emotions. Music making and improvisation are great forms of expression, while existing songs can be therapeutic tools to identify and explore emotions.

SOCIAL & COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Music is a powerful form of a non-verbal communication, which makes music therapy accessible to non-speaking clients. Music therapy also provides a safe, therapeutic setting for social interaction—whether that is practicing interpersonal and communication skills, or for socializing and overall wellbeing.

COGNITIVE SKILLS

Music therapists can work to improve and develop cognitive skills through music discussions, lyric analyses, music making, and songwriting. This can help in areas like reality orientation, problem-solving skills, concentration and attention span, and decision-making skills.

MUSIC THERAPY CAN DEVELOP AND IMPROVE:

  • Confidence
  • Coping Skills
  • Motivation
  • Resilience
  • Positive Relationships
  • Relaxation Skills
  • Self-Esteem
  • Sense of Control
  • Social Support

"Music therapy can contribute to the quality of mental health care by providing an arena for stimulation and development of strengths and resources that may contribute to the growth of positive identity and hope for people with mental illness." (Solli, Rolvsjord, & Borg, 2013)

Music Therapy and Depression

Research has shown that patients receiving music therapy showed less severe depression symptoms than patients receiving typical treatments. The control group only received psychotherapy (talk therapy) and also received medication and counseling as needed.

This study demonstrates the potential that music therapy has in alleviating depression symptoms. This study also evidences a positive effect of music therapy on anxiety.
